His real name was Fred Winbilger and by either name was known as an excellent defensive catcher in his day.
Fred was never known to back down from any other player including the likes of rough, tough Dan McGann of the New
York Giants. In the eighth inning of a game between the Giants and Phillies, Fred was assaulted by McGann who had
slid hard into Fred at home plate and hit him in the stomach. Fred responded by throwing a ball at McGann. McGann
then attacked Fred as well as a nearby vendor boy and this quickly erupted into a fan riot. Just a typical afternoon
at the ballpark.
