Bill had a noted minor league career and was considered an All-Star first baseman while playing for the 1907 Providence Clam Diggers of the Eastern League. He was highly touted by Pittsburgh and had a productive year in 1909. Pittsburgh, in fact, beat the Ty Cobb-led Detroit Tigers for the world championship, that year. Bill was an avid sportsman and was considered one of the nation's top soccer players.
