'Doc' made his way to the 'show' with his crafty spitball (legal in this era). In 1902, he played for the Boston Pilgrims (later known as the Red Sox) and in 1903 with the newly formed NY Highlanders (Yankees). As his lifetime major league pitching record was 1-1 with a 5.00 ERA, Doc had figured his future big league pitching career was not so promising. He ultimately decided that the 'game' would help him finance his medical education. Upon retiring from baseball, Doc became a prominent physician in Durham, North Carolina.
