Johnny Bates had the all-around attributes of the dead-ball era player. Speed, good defensive skills and occasional
power helped Johnny stay in the big leagues for 9 years. Two records are worth noting. The first one is that Johnny
hit a homerun in his first at bat. Many players have accomplished this feat, except that Johnny happened to be
the first player in modern major league history to do it (1906). The second feat is that John hit for the cycle
during one game in 1907. This accomplishment was none to easy as he was the only player in the league to do so
that year.
