Lena had a lackluster major league career as he was considered the 'good field, no hit' variety of player. While
coaching for Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's during the 1930's, Lena heard an umpire complain about the slickness
of new baseballs that came into play. He came up with the idea of using mud that had special qualities (which he
found as a kid) along the Pennsauken Creek near his hometown and developed it into a sellable product. It quickly
found acceptance among the major league teams and the umpires whose job it had been to apply the mud to the baseballs
before the start of the game.
