Harry, the brother of Hall of Fame pitcher Stan Coveleski, had all the makings of a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher.
His nickname, the Giant Killer, came about while pitching for Philadelphia. Harry 'owned' the powerhouse NY Giants.
In 1908, he beat the Giants 3 times in one week, stalling the Giants efforts to claim the NL pennant. The Giants
paid Harry back the following year by 'running' him out of the National League. They accomplished this feat by
finding out Harry's weakness for carrying a whole bologna in his back pocket of his uniform and chewing on it during
games. The Giants taunted Harry by asking for a 'chew' of his bologna. Harry was so unnerved that he never beat
the Giants again. Other NL teams also taunted him after finding out his secret. Harry at the end of the season
went back to the minors and resurfaced in the AL in 1914 with Detroit.
