George Davis, one of baseball's premier players at the turn of the century, has been honored
with being selected by the Veteran's Committee for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. Davis' on
the field statistics which led to his nomination and induction can be found at the Baseball Hall of Fame . There was more to George Davis than just his Hall of Fame statistics. 'Gorgeous George', captain
and player/manager of the NY Giants, was a hero off the field, as well. In 1900, George, while traveling with some
of his NY Giant teammates to the old Polo Grounds on a trolley, came upon a horrific apartment building fire in
Harlem with many trapped tenants. George and his teammates got off the trolley and assisted in rescuing many women
and children who were trapped on the fire escapes. At one point, George saw a woman trapped on the top floor of
the building and climbed up the fire escape through the blistering heat and rescued the woman. George Davis was
also the center of controversy that caused a furor between the National and American Leagues. Davis challenged
the 'reserve clause' when he jumped in 1902 from the Giants to the rival American League's Chicago White Sox where
he, apparently, signed a 2 year contract. In 1903, George jumped back to the National League signing with the Giants,
again. The American League led by Ban Johnson and Chicago White Sox magnate, Charles Comiskey, demanded that Davis
honor his remaining contract with the Sox. John Montgomery Ward, former major league player, owner, attorney and
inductee into the Hall of Fame (1964), represented Davis' interests and defended his right to return to the Giants
producing a 2 year contract that George had signed with the Giants. Ban Johnson was irate and demanded that the
National Commission order Davis to return to the White Sox. Well, George did play briefly for the Giants in 1903
but was ordered to return to the White Sox in 1904 by the commission.
