Red played for Notre Dame for two years before playing in the majors with the Cardinals. Fast
and with exceptional power, Red moved to the Giants in 1909 and had four consecutive exceptional seasons. Not only
with home run power, Red was one of the league's best base stealers with 48 in 1909 and 57 in 1910. Red's manager,
John J. McGraw was a stickler for his players to follow his
signs while at bat. It just so happened that Red Murray was once fined $100 by McGraw for missing a bunt sign.
The irony is that Red swung away on the pitch and hit the ball out of the park for a home run.
